What to choose in a bed shop

Beds are a piece of home furnishings to which we often do not give due attention. Wrongly so, as choosing the right construction together with a mattress of the right firmness is crucial for a comfortable sleep, which in turn has a considerable impact on our well-being. To help you with this, we have prepared a bed guide. It will help to ensure that sleepless nights remain an unpleasant memory.

What size bed will be suitable?

Bed sizes are given according to the size of the mattress. How does this work in practice? If you're looking for a bed that' s 140 x 200 cm, you'll actually find a bed that's suitable for a mattress of this size. The bed frame itself, on the other hand, will of course be slightly larger (add a few - several centimetres - to the size of the mattress).

Standard adult beds are designed for a mattress length of 200 cm. This is enough for even taller people to get a good night's sleep. In terms of bed width, however, there is much more variety.

Single beds

For adults, 80 cm wide mattresses or slightly wider 90 cm mattresses are preferred for comfortable sleeping. Of course, the wider the bed, the more comfortable it is. For people who need more space when sleeping, beds with a width of 100 or even 120 cm are ideal.

Double beds

In the case of double beds, the minimum mattress width is 140 cm, while full comfort is offered by beds with a width of 160 or slightly more spacious beds with a width of 180 cm. On the other hand, double beds with a width of 200 cm are by far the most comfortable option, which is a great choice for those with large bedrooms.

Bedroom beds - practical considerations

When planning to buy a bed for your bedroom, it's worth starting by deciding where you're going to put it. The bed should not obstruct access to wardrobes and cupboards or other bedroom furniture, and it should not stand next to a radiator (so as not to disrupt air circulation). Placing the bed next to a window is not the best solution either, especially if you like to ventilate your bedroom extensively and leave it ajar at night.

Where, on the other hand, should the bed be placed to make you feel comfortable? Ideally, its headboard should be against the wall. It is a good idea to have contacts next to it (beds usually come in pairs with bedside lamps). If you have cupboards and shelves in your bedroom, make sure they are hung at a place and height that minimises the risk of banging your head against them when you go to bed or get up in the morning. A bruise is certainly not what we want to start the day with. Be sure to take care of the space along the sides of the bed. Approximately 70-90 cm of free space is enough to use the bed comfortably. Comfortable and practical: beds for the room

Things are slightly different in the living room than in the bedroom. Due to the nature of this type of room, retractable beds are a common solution, which frees up space during the day. Further solutions are beds integrated into cupboards or bunk beds with a desk or wardrobes underneath - these solutions allow maximum use of space.

What size should the bed we want to put in the room be? It is crucial to adapt the size of the bed to the space, so that it provides comfort while not overwhelming the room. In small living rooms, consider beds that are 120-140 cm wide. In larger spaces, you can opt for a bed with a width of 160-180 cm, which can successfully replace a sofa while offering adequate comfort when sleeping.

As for the placement of the bed, it is advisable to place it against a wall, preferably in the corner of the room. This solution will save space and create a cosy corner for resting. As with other rooms, the bed in the living room should not stand next to a window or a radiator.

What about the colour scheme?

The colour scheme of a bed, due to its dimensions, has a not inconsiderable impact on the aesthetics of the bedroom (or other room in which it is located). The good news is that bed manufacturers usually opt for neutral colours. This reduces the risk that the wrong bed colour choice will overwhelm its surroundings. It is also a good idea to air the bedroom regularly to prevent moisture build-up in the upholstery, which can lead to unpleasant odours. Any soiling that does occur should be removed immediately, preferably using a special product designed for the fabric type.
