Wardrobes and shelves - support for room organisation

Wardrobes are the unassuming hero of your home. Regardless of the room, they are an element without which it would be difficult to store clothing and everyday items. Since we use wardrobes on a daily basis, it is important to properly plan the layout of the shelves, drawers and rods inside, as well as to properly estimate the storage space we will need.

Wardrobes for the bedroom

The wardrobe in the bedroom is mainly used to store clothes and linen. Its design should ensure that all the contents are within easy reach and guarantee that our dresses, jackets or shirts are not creased. On the other hand, bedrooms are often small rooms where every square centimetre counts. In this case, a shallow wardrobe - that is, less than the standard 60 cm, but at least 50 cm deep - can be a good solution. Why this depth? Well, the reference point is the width of the hanger with a small margin added. The aforementioned depth of 50 cm is the minimum guarantee that our clothes will be able to hang freely and will not be crushed inside the wardrobe. What else is worth thinking about before buying a wardrobe for the bedroom? Ergonomics, or in practice the distribution of shelves and drawers inside the wardrobe, will certainly count.

Ergonomics - the key to a comfortable wardrobe

A 160-185 cm tall man (let us assume that the vast majority of the population is within this range) is able to reach with his hand to a height of 180-210 cm. If he has to reach into a wardrobe, this reach is further limited by its depth and in practice drops to 170-190 cm. This means that the shelves and pull-outs on which we keep the wardrobe items we use most often should be at this maximum height. Drawers, on the other hand (in order to use them comfortably) should be at a height corresponding to approximately 50 per cent of our height (i.e. in practice 80-90 cm).

Wardrobes for the living room

The ergonomic issues mentioned above are of course universal, and apply to wardrobes in all rooms. However, wardrobes for the living room have a slightly different specification. They are often equipped with drawers that are accessible from the front (without having to swing the wardrobe door open or apart). Wardrobes in the living room also usually do not have clothes rails (unless, due to lack of space, we decide to keep our wardrobe in them), instead the entire interior is taken up by shelves and the aforementioned drawers. In addition, the fronts are often partly glazed, so they can also be used as display cabinets or handy libraries.

Wardrobes for the hallway

A hallway is usually a room of small size, so shallow wardrobes will work well in such a case. How shallow they may be is determined by their purpose - light jackets take up considerably less space than coats and furs. As with bedroom wardrobes, the things we reach for most often should be placed low so that we can reach for them easily. Drawers that hold scarves, hats, gloves and other accessories for our wardrobe are an integral part of hallway wardrobes. A mirror is also often added - removing the need to look for wall space to hang one.

White wardrobes

Wardrobes in this colour have two main advantages. White is a neutral colour and therefore blends harmoniously into a variety of styles and interior designs. White wardrobes also fit into small and dark rooms, brightening them up and at the same time blending in, so that they do not dominate the space (this applies especially to larger sized wardrobes).

In modern interiors, white wardrobes with straight lines and minimalist design blend in perfectly with other design elements such as glass, metal or lacquered surfaces. In such arrangements, wardrobes with smooth fronts and minimalist handles are often used, which add elegance and modernity to the interior. On the other hand, in classic interiors, white wardrobes can have more ornate fronts, delicate carvings or stylish handles, which adds warmth and a traditional feel to the room.

What's inside: narrow wardrobes (60-90 cm)

Narrow wardrobes are usually also tall (in the form of a post), which allows for adequate space inside combined with a reduction in the floor space taken up. They are usually divided by a single partition wall or have no partition at all. In the case of a cabinet divided into two parts, usually one part is occupied by rods and drawers and the other is a series of narrow shelves. For this reason, to achieve a multi-functional wardrobe, it is best to put two narrow wardrobes together (or treat them as an addition to the largest wardrobe in the room). Single-door wardrobes are very popular, but sometimes double-door models are also used. Thanks to their narrow width, they require less free space required to open them.

Standard width wardrobes (100-140 cm)

This width of wardrobe allows the shelves, cupboards and rods inside to be arranged quite freely and divided into two spacious sections. Often, one or both of them are filled with shelves in the lower part, while above that there is a bar or bars on two levels on one side, while shelves are placed on the other. At a height of 180-200 cm, wardrobes of this width are roomy enough to fit an entire wardrobe for one person. Like narrow wardrobes, the front is usually divided into two wings, but in this case opening the door requires more free space in front of the wardrobe.

Wide wardrobes (over 150 cm)

Usually the configuration of large wardrobes is similar to that of standard width wardrobes. The main difference is that there is simply more space in them. For this reason, wardrobes of this size are sufficient to act as a two-person wardrobe. Sliding and pull-out wardrobes are fitted with sliding doors, which is a practical solution for larger rooms. Sliding doors do not require additional space to open, allowing efficient use of available space. Some models are fitted with bifold doors, which are also a solution that requires less free space than standard opening doors.

How do I solve the issue of lighting in a wardrobe?

Solving the lighting issue in the wardrobe can be achieved using several practical and modern methods. Firstly, you can install internal LED lighting, which is energy-efficient and long-lasting. LED strips or LED strips can be installed along the shelves or on top of the wardrobe, ensuring that the entire interior of the wardrobe is evenly lit. Alternatively, LED spotlights can be used to target specific areas of the wardrobe, such as clothes rails or shelves.

Another solution is self-powered lighting (from batteries or a rechargeable battery). This is easy to install and does not require any electrical wiring inside the wardrobe. This makes it particularly suitable for wardrobes with limited access to power sources. Self-powered lights can be magnetically or adhesive-mounted, which means that they do not interfere with the structure of the enclosure and can be easily removed or relocated if necessary.

How many lumens should the lighting in a cupboard have?

For small and medium-sized wardrobes, lighting with a brightness of 400-600 lumens will be sufficient. For larger cabinets, such as those over 2 metres wide, several light sources with a total brightness of up to 1,000 lumens can be considered.

When choosing lighting, it is also worth considering the colour of the light. Neutral white light (around 4000K) is usually best for wardrobes, as it accurately reflects the colours of the stored clothes. Warmer light (2700K-3000K) is more cosy, but can 'falsify' the colours of our clothes.

What material can a wardrobe front be made of?

A good and cheap solution are fronts made of laminated board. The use of laminate means that we can choose from a variety of colours, while at the same time it is easy to keep clean. In addition, a piece of furniture made of laminated board weighs less than wardrobes made of solid wood. For those who want a more authentic material, we recommend veneered fronts. They add warmth and elegance to the interior, but require appropriate care and may become greasy (if, for example, a tip-on opening system is used, which requires constant touching of the veneer with the fingers).

Another material is classic solid wood, which goes well with traditional interiors, but has the same disadvantages as veneer. The advantages of wood include its natural and cosy appearance and the fact that, with proper maintenance, it will last for years in great condition. All of the above-mentioned materials are often found in combination with glass fronts. Their advantage, on the other hand, is that they are multifunctional (they eliminate the need for a separate mirror), optically enlarge and brighten interiors, but are susceptible to scratching and breakage.
