High stool or bar stool?

You've probably come across both names. Is there actually a difference between one type of furniture and the other? Basically, no. A stool is usually associated with a low stool without a backrest, so a high stool is no different from a bar stool, as long as it is also backless. Of course, this is just one version, because chairs and bar stools come in very many variations.

Bar stools: backless and backrested

The simplest form is a stool without a backrest, resembling just a stool on high legs. Such a bar stool, although less comfortable than a stool with a backrest, takes up less space at the bar. Anyone who has experienced nightlife knows that pubs can get really crowded in the evenings, so the question of the size of bar stools can make a difference. Bar stools with a backrest have a slightly more sophisticated design. This is good for places where there is a bit more space and where it does not get too crowded in the evenings.

Bar stools are made of wood or metal. Wooden stools are a great solution, combining durability with aesthetics. Such a piece of furniture, provided it is properly protected with a solid layer of varnish, will last for years. If splashed or superficially burnt, it can be refinished to regain its original appearance.

Wooden bar stools

Many of you will probably be familiar with the legendary chair No. 14 by Michael Thonet. This wooden piece of furniture has become one of the symbols of French cafés and proof that any piece of furniture can 'make a difference' in an interior. So if you are looking for seating for your bar or restaurant, wooden bar stools can be a good choice to introduce a cosy atmosphere. You can even find a bar stool on the market that is based on a Thonet chair.

Wooden high stools are usually made of oak or beech wood. The aforementioned stool a' la Thonet also has a backrest made of bent wood. The seat is also usually made of this material (alternatives include an upholstered seat or a metal seat).

What colours dominate the available models? Perhaps unsurprisingly, they are usually kept in natural wood colours, ranging from light beech wood shades, through darker oak wood to versions stained with varnish or painted in navy blue, grey or black.

Upholstered stools

We have already mentioned stools with an upholstered seat. This is a comfortable and stylish solution that suits bars in more exclusive establishments, hotel lobbies or at the island in the home kitchen. These types of stools also come in a version with an upholstered seat. The overall colour is usually turquoise, bottle green, navy blue or grey.

Stools for the island

Tall stools are not just the domain of bars and restaurants. If you have (or plan to have) an open kitchen with an island in your home, tall stools will be a natural choice. For kitchens with a modern, streamlined style, we recommend purchasing stools with a more ornate character - this will bring a small decorative touch to your kitchen. You can opt for stools based on design classics (once again, we will mention the Thonet chair here) or upholstered stools with a backrest. An interesting treatment that will also enrich your kitchen would be to buy several different stools, significantly different in colour and style. Such controlled chaos at the kitchen island can also enrich the home space, as long as it is designed in a minimalist style.

For interiors with a lot of decorative touches, we advise the opposite. Modern stools in natural wood or another neutral colour and a simple design will be a good solution. It will help you avoid stylistic overload of the room.

Stools with a backrest are a good choice

In crowded places, it is better to use stools without a backrest. However, at home or in a restaurant, stools with a backrest will be a better option. The reason is simple - they are more comfortable. As long as you like to spend time at the table, sitting on a stool for a long time can be tiring for your back. High-back stools (which are simply chairs on high legs) are the most comfortable option, but you can also choose mid-back versions.

Modern stools

We mentioned modern stools when arranging a kitchen with an island. However, this type of furniture is obviously much more versatile. Thanks to their subdued design, they fit into a variety of interior settings, whether in the home dining room or living room, or in restaurants or bars. This is a solution for advocates of absolute minimalism in interior design who do not want any distinctive elements in their home, as well as for people who like decorative interiors and want to avoid stylistic overload of the space.

In addition, modern stools usually have upholstered seats and backrests, making them more comfortable to use.
