Oval table: from legends to the modern living room

In the ranking of furniture with legendary connotations, the round table would certainly take a high position. Round tables have featured in many stories and myths as a symbol of equality and unity. One example is the legend of King Arthur and his knights, who used to sit at a round table. The round shape in this case alludes to the lack of hierarchy, where all the people sitting at the table are separated by the same distance.

As in every legend, there is a grain of truth to be found here too. Both round and oval tables encourage less formal and more direct communication.

Oval tables, or between a circle and a rectangle

Oval tables can be assumed to have some of the advantages of both round and rectangular tables. Let's start with the aesthetic issues. Many people find round shapes more sophisticated and pleasing to look at compared to straight and broken lines, so an oval table can bring more elegance and cosiness to your interior than a rectangular table. Moving on to practicality: thanks to its rounded edges, an oval table is also safer for children and easier to move around.

On the other hand, oval tables have advantages that round tablesdo not have . Large round tables are a rather impractical solution. At dinner or other family events, reaching for food set in the middle of it can be problematic because of the distance (the radius of the tabletop). With large oval tables, on the other hand, there is no such problem, thanks to the different proportions of the tabletop.

How to set an oval dining table? The starting point (as with any other room) is its shape and the division of its functional zones. Obviously, it will act as the focal point of the dining room, while at the same time it should be positioned in such a way that it does not impede communication between the different areas (so that you do not have to walk around it when heading from the kitchen to the home library, for example ). Remember also to position the table in a well-lit area. In practice, you can position it near a window or a point of light in the form of a ceiling lamp. Ideally, it should be centrally above the worktop to ensure it is well lit.

As always, remember to leave about 100 cm of free space around the table, necessary to move freely around the piece of furniture and to use the chairs comfortably.
