When selecting furniture for a room, the starting point is always the size of the room. After all, the table must not unduly restrict the freedom of movement in the kitchen or living room.

Let's assume that our living room is small. So what is the minimum sensible size of a table for such a room? At this point, a small statistical digression - the vast majority of households comprise up to 4 people, so let's assume that such a small table should be at least 4 people. Each of these 4 people should have a square of at least 70 by 40 cm on the tabletop, which gives us a minimum table size of -130 by 90 cm. To this should be added 90 cm on each side to be able to move the chairs in and out freely. In total, for a rectangular small living room table, we need a rectangle of 210 by 270 cm, as long as the table is set against a wall and you need to add an extra 90 cm along 3 of the 4 edges.

The aforementioned rectangular table measuring 130 by 90 cm is enough to spread out a laptop, eat lunch, read a newspaper or relax with a glass of wine. Although, of course, the larger the tabletop, the more comfortable it is!

Rectangular living room table: a piece of furniture that connects (homemakers and functions)

Suppose, however, that you have a little more space in the living room or do not have a clearly separated living room and kitchen. With this, you can opt for a larger table - for example a six- or eight-seater (i.e. 200-250 cm long).

Where to place such a piece of furniture? You can make the table the centre of your home life and place it in the middle, as long as you are able to secure enough space around it to move freely around the room. However, in such a situation, also remember to provide adequate lighting - creating a spot of light directly above the table. If possible, it's a good idea to position the table near a window so that you can benefit from natural light during the day - which can come in handy when you're reading the newspaper for your morning coffee, for example.

If the room is shaped in such a way that there are natural "bays" in it, you can fit your rectangular table right in there. The advantage is that the table won't get in the way of the living room and the rectangular shape means that you make good use of all the available space. A rectangular table will also fit nicely into a corner of the room.

The smaller the kitchen, the more thoughtful the decision to buy a table should be. In small, enclosed kitchens, rectangular narrow tables that can be attached to one of the walls will work well. Insofar as you will be using the table more as an additional kitchen worktop, you can possibly purchase a kitchen trolley.
