A bit of history to start with

The origins of modern bathrooms date back to the late 19th century, when waterworks appeared in European cities and with them bathroom fittings suitable for running water. When looking at photos of bathrooms from the 1920s, one detail catches the eye - the virtual absence of bathroom furniture. This was probably due to the low resistance of wood to prolonged exposure to water and steam and the lack of specialised varnishes with which to protect it. Laminates were the answer to this problem, but they did not appear until the mid-20th century. The first plastic furniture, on the other hand, appeared in the 1970s.

Modern bathroom furniture

Pre-war bathroom furniture and fittings, while undoubtedly having their charm, would not work at all in modern construction. In currently commissioned flats, bathrooms are small rooms in which every inch of space has to be precisely planned.

This is the main advantage of modern bathroom furniture. Thanks to their modular structure, you can make efficient use of the available space. An additional advantage of modern bathroom furniture is the use of laminated panels, which are lightweight and at the same time resistant to moisture and easy to keep clean.

Optimal arrangement of bathroom furniture

In the bathroom, it is all about clever solutions and creating sufficient space in the cabinets. At the same time, bathroom cabinets and fittings should be arranged in such a way that they do not interfere with each other (problems with opening cabinet doors, insufficient legroom at the toilet, etc.).

A tried and tested way to maximise the use of space is to use cabinets above the toilet, under the washbasin and narrow pillars in the corners of the bathroom. It is also worth betting on multifunctionality - for example, bathroom furniture with a laundry basket. It's also worth considering a built-in washing machine, so you can (or could) make the most of the space around it.

Bathroom furniture colours

In addition to personal colour preferences, it is worth considering other factors when choosing bathroom furniture, such as the size of the room and access to natural light - usually bathrooms are windowless spaces.

White bathroom furniture

This is a bathroom classic. White, due to the white bathroom ceramics and white tiles commonly used in bathrooms in the old days, tends to dominate bathrooms. The colour has many advantages - it is neutral and blends well with most other colours, it brightens dark interiors, and it is less likely to show water deposits.

Not surprisingly, white bathroom furniture is the most popular choice. You will find many models on the market, kept in a modern style, with smooth and fluted fronts.

Black bathroom furniture

Black is a less obvious colour for the bathroom, but this does not mean that it is devoid of advantages. Bathroom furniture rarely has uniformly black, plain fronts. They usually have a pattern (imitation stone, for example) or a texture (black fronts with fluting or a 3d effect). This type of configuration can add elegance to an interior, provided it has access to daylight - which is not often the case in bathrooms. The disadvantages of black bathroom furniture? Bathroom furniture in green can have a more powdery, mint shade or be dark green.
