Bathroom cabinets for washbasins

Selecting a bathroom basin cabinet is not quantum physics. However, this does not mean that you can approach this task with absolutely no preparation.

Let's assume that you already have your vision of your bathroom ready and know where you want to place the various fixtures - including the wash basin. Measure the place where it will be placed to determine the maximum size of its body. When doing so, remember to allow enough space in front of it to be able to open doors or pull out drawers freely.

Once you know what space you have available, you can move on to point two - the selection of the washbasin. Whether you choose an inset or countertop wash basin depends on a lot - in the case of the former, the dimensions of the cabinet body should be perfectly matched to the dimensions of the wash basin. In the case of the latter, you will not have to limit yourself to its size. Furthermore, the wash basin should be suitably smaller so that it does not protrude beyond the contour of the cabinet. Ideally, a space of 5-10 cm should be left at each edge.

Once you have chosen your wash basin (or at least the agreed type of wash basin), you can then move on to choosing the cabinet itself.

Basin cabinets usually have shelves or drawers. Which option is better? As a general rule, drawers are more convenient because they mean you don't have to reach inside the cabinet, and you have all the contents at your fingertips when you pull out the drawer. The disadvantage is that the use of drawers means that you lose a little of the space inside the cabinet, and this construction is more expensive than a cabinet with shelves only. Nevertheless, we recommend this solution because of its convenience.

In small bathrooms, light colours, such as white, beige or pastel shades, will optically enlarge the space. On the other hand, darker colours such as graphite, anthracite or navy blue will add elegance and depth in larger rooms. Natural wood tones are also a fashionable choice, as they bring natural warmth into a room and also blend well with the previously mentioned colours.

Washbasin cabinets are constantly exposed to moisture. Designers of this type of furniture bear this in mind and usually offer cabinets made of laminated or lacquered board. Such a finish guarantees splash resistance.

In terms of ease of cleaning, laminated board is best, while lacquered board, despite its attractive appearance, is prone to scratching (especially when trying to clean it of deposits).

Wood is a very attractive but demanding material. It needs to be very well protected from moisture (several layers of good varnish are best) and refreshed every few years (removing the old varnish layer and applying a new one). The advantage of this material is its longevity - properly maintained and protected wooden cabinets will keep you looking good for a long time.

After this rather long introduction, let's take a look at the most popular sizes of washbasin cabinets.

The small size of these cabinets means that the best solution for them would be to buy an overlay basin to use all the space available from above. Such narrow cabinets generally have less depth compared to the larger sizes (around 20-25 cm compared to 40-50 cm). Usually such cabinets, due to their compact size, are equipped with shelves rather than drawers (whose mechanism would additionally take up space).

Available storage space: A cabinet at 40 cm wide, 25 cm deep and 55 cm high gives 0.055 m. That's about 55% of the space needed to store toiletries and cosmetics for one person (although of course you have to add space for cleaning products and possibly dirty linen).

In the case of 50 cm wide cabinets, we have a similar situation - they are quite small and therefore best suited to a configuration with an overlapping wash basin. However, among basins in this size, you will already find basins with drawers. Unlike 40 cm cabinets, these usually have a full depth (40-50 cm).

Available storage space: At 50 cm wide, 40 cm deep and 55 cm high, you get 0.11 m3 of space. This is enough to store toiletries and cosmetics for one person.

This is the cabinet size that allows you to fit a full-size, convenient countertop washbasin and configure the space underneath it as you wish.

Available storage space: At 70 cm wide, 55 cm high and 40 cm deep, you gain 0.154 m3. There is enough space for one person's toiletries and cosmetics, plus plenty of extra room for towels, for example.

This cabinet width allows a large countertop wash basin to be fitted, leaving a generous chunk of countertop - ideal for putting away a toothbrush, razor or soap container, for example.

Available storage space: with the assumed cabinet dimensions of 80x55x40 cm, you have as much as 0.176 m3 of space for cosmetics and other utensils as well as towels.

As can be seen from the list above, already 70-80 cm wide under-basin cabinets offer plenty of space. However, for larger households, people with an above-average amount of cosmetics or those who simply like more space - large washbasin cabinets with a width of more than 100 cm will be a good solution.

Wash basin cabinets with a width of 120 cm already allow two small countertop wash basins with a width of approx. 40 cm to be mounted next to each other. Or one large wash basin with plenty of countertop space left over. The available space under the countertop allows for the installation of a full-size laundry basket or, for example, drawers in three rows.

Available storage space: At 120 cm wide, 55 cm high and 40 cm deep, you gain as much as 0.264 m3 . There is enough space for toiletries and cosmetics for two people, towels, a supply of toilet paper and larger accessories such as drying racks.

The use of the number singular in the name can be a little misleading, as cabinets of this width are usually paired with two wash basins. Even after they have been installed, there will still be space left on the countertop for small toiletries.

Available storage space: A cabinet with a width of 140 cm, a depth of 40 cm and a height of 55 cm provides as much as 0.308 m3 of space. This is as much as 5.5 times more than the smallest 40 cm cabinet. So much space allows virtually unlimited possibilities when configuring this piece of furniture - you can divide it into two rows of drawers and one row of shelves or install a laundry basket, for example.
